What makes Riverdance so mesmerizing (or bizarrely disconcerting, if you prefer) is the fact that its performers don't use their arms. In fact, one gets the impression that it's not something that should be undertaken by bipedal animals at all. How appropriate, then, that a canine is responsible for the most satisfying Riverdance yet. What makes the moves of this mutt -- identified as Mini -- so satisfying is that they expose the phenomenon for what it is -- cultural detritus that is best when practiced by adorable pets.

If you want an example of "cultural detritus," turn on your television. Almost any channel will do.
ooooh... you're so cool Steve, are you one of those a-holes that tells people you don't watch TV because you think it makes you superior for some reason... then you go spend 72 hours playing World of Warcraft?
Hey Poot
I have no idea what World of Warcraft is. The writer, no doubt a snob, referred to Riverdance as "cultural detritus." I think most of what's on TV is a far better example of detritus. Sorry if I offended your favorite show. What is it, "The Bachelorette" or "Entertainment Tonight."
Change your name. Poot is French for whore.
it's funny-ish, but looks like there's something definitelyvery wrong with those dogs, like they were poisoned or something
Cool video! Fun loving dog.
While this video is cute it also brings up the fact that this dogs owner is not properly caring for their dog.
People...if you hear a dogs nails as they walk on your floors...the nails are too long and you need to cut them. The nail starts to push back into their paws and it can be very painful for your pet.
When you allow them to stay long they not only hurt the dog but because they hurt the dog starts to compensate by walking differently and this can also cause hip problems in their future.
Please take care of their nails if you love them at all.
Please...stop it (@ least for now) about the nails. Do you folks have anything nice or funny to say about anything??? Good Grief !!!
I beg to differ! If you have tile/hardwood floors, in other words no rugs or carpeting, you can often hear your pets nails even immediately after a trim!
I have cats and dogs who get their nails done regularly. I have completely bare floors, and the moment I put them back down after a clipping, I can hear them clicking away. There are lots of reasons this can occur and lots why even with nails that are too long, you WON'T hear them!
You ARE correct that a dog's nails can become a serious problem if allowed to grow too long.
On another note, while growing up, my folks never trimmed any of our pets nails. Yet they never became overgrown...probably had something to do with the fact that they were always out running in the yard or being walked on paved sidewalks, etc. This will often keep a dogs nails worn down.
How f'in rude.
OK, maybe the dogs nails were longer than they should be....but, a hole, this was all about the DANCE !!!!
Why not comment about that as well.
The nails actually helped in the sound effects. Maybe the owner had taps on the dogs feet....ever think of that ?\
Buncha dumb f&&%$ in some of these comments.
It even says to "keep your comments relevant to the blog entry".
You are such a dumbass. You know NOTHING about dogs (or animals in general, obviously).
If you actually looked at the video on the close up, you would have noticed that the dog's toes are spread and his nails are stretched out. His toes are spread TO GAIN TRACTION ON A WOOD FLOOR. If he were walking on carpeting his toes would be closed and the nails not as obvious. It is instinctive for an animal to want to keep as many foot pads on surfaces as possible in order to defend itself (an ancient inbred life preserving habit) if needed.
Please don't own any pet until you thoroughly educate yourself!!
Oh; shut up! Stop the negativity. Life is too short. I have three dogs and when they walk, they "click". And their nails are not too long.
Get a sense of humor! Enough with the ridiculous lectures about stupid things. Lighten up and enjoy life. And get a pedicure!
LOL That's not the Riverdance.... That's the PEE PEE DANCE. Hellooooo. LOLOL How funny, I love that video.
That's exactly what my 9 year old said--Mom that dog isn't doing the Riverdance, he has to pee! LOL Cute vid :c)
The point of the Irish step dancing in Riverdance, whereas people do not move their arms, harkens back to when the Irish were imprisoned in British jails. The Irish, never one to let a simple thing like being jailed stop them from having a good time, passed the time singing and dancing. In an effort to stop this, the British jailers prohibited any movement of the arms, thinking this would put an end to it. It didn't, it just spawned a dance whereby the movement of the arms is avoided.
Ryan's daughter
What a load of rubbish. There are lots of local step dances across
the British Isles this is just one of them.
Riverdance, Pee pee dance, nails too long or not..... This is just cute no matter what your arguments are!!
I loved the video. Kandiadley, there was no call to be rude to Ryan's Daughter; even if it is a tall tale, it was interesting, moreso than your obnoxious refutation. Learn some manners.
Doesn't anyone else think there is something wrong with this picture? Someone needs to look into this situation. This looks like it could be more than "river dancing". They look disoriented. They keep falling. They look like they are drugged. I hope not!!
I also think there is something wrong with those dogs....it is not right that they keep falling down...I didn't think it was funny at all..that is not normal behavior for a dog...maybe they were poisoned
